Three early stage researchers (ESR) with complementary scientific knowledge are working on the CLaSSiC project, bringing together different disciplines to create a novel platform for delivering sustained skin and hair benefits using controlled stimulation of skin stem cells by light

Serena Buscone

Hi! I’m Serena, one of the three PhD students within CLaSSiC.

I’m a Biologist from Italy, where I graduated in Molecular Biology at Bicocca University in Milan. 

After graduation I applied for two research grants and was awarded them in the area of Biomedical Science: I worked the first year in the Department of Pathology at S. Gerardo Hospital in Monza, Italy, and after for six months at the European Institute of Oncology, Milan, on a project aimed at the development of new imaging tools relevant for prognosis and diagnosis of colon cancer. In order to improve my professional and scientific skills in a new challenging experience abroad I applied for the current position within the CLaSSiC project. 

I’m actually focused on investigation of the effects of light on hair follicles and hair follicle stem cells. So far I discovered that surprisingly hair follicles express receptors involved in vision, and in the future my research goal will be to investigate if light modulation of those receptors can impact hair phisiology.

I strongly believe that understanding insights about molecular, cellular and biophysics effects of light on hair will give us the opportunity to develop new tools that could help people in the management of hair disorders. 

Charles Mignon

Charles Mignon

My name is Charles Mignon. I was born in the south of France, in Marseille.

I got most of my education in France and completed my Master's degree from a double program between France (Institut d’Optique) and Sweden (KTH) working on modeling the thermal effect of laser treatment in the skin.

My background is in Optical Engineering combined with Biomedical Engineering and within the CLaSSiC project I am responsible for driving my research project along three directions: devices, modeling, and photobiology.

In particular, I am responsible for creating novel light-based devices for treatment of stem cells, developing optical modeling tools to describe light propagation in the skin and hair, and carrying out experimental work with skin cells using a designed statistical approach.

To me combining biology and physics is challenging and rewarding at the same time, because it helps to combine new approaches to address biological related.

Combining biology with a physical point of view can be challenging and rewarding at the same time, and lead to a refreshing approach to problems. Aiming at using light to trigger beneficial effects for skin and hair health requires understanding of decomposed light properties interactions with biological objects, from as artificial as a cell culture to as real as possible to in-vivo skin structure.

Irene Castellano

My name is Irene Castellano and just like Serena and Charles I am one of the three Marie Curie Early Stage Researchers working in the CLaSSiC project.

Originally from Zaragoza (Spain), I obtained my BSc in Biotechnology from the University of Lleida, Spain and continued my studies in biomedical research by studying for an MSc in Molecular Medicine at Cranfield University, UK.

Within the CLaSSiC project, I am responsible for investigating the interaction of light with the skin to identify novel solutions for wound healing.

I expect that identification of key molecular pathways involved in light reception and understanding how to modulate them will lead to the development of effective and scientifically proven light-based wound healing therapies.

I am really enjoying participating in this European Industrial Doctorate as I have the opportunity to work with people with very different educational backgrounds, learn from all of them and experience working with both University and industry. I strongly believe that joining knowledge is the best way to success.
